Channel 11’s Aaron Martin reported that five shell casings were found.
After hearing the shots, Charles Timbers, who was working about a block away, ran to help keep the victim conscious until paramedics arrived.
“I came around and saw the white car going down the hill. I ran up there and I see the dude in the truck and I tried to get him out, and he's smashed between the steering wheel and the dashboard,” Timbers said.
Although he was badly hurt, the driver, who was later identified as 27-year-old Dontae Thompson, was conscious and taken to a hospital in critical condition.
“He was bleeding a lot. He was hanging upside down, and I could barely see the color of his skin. It was so red,” Timbers said. “I just kept telling him to talk to me, move your fingers and stuff. When the police got there, they told me to back up, but he was still conscious and his pulse was really strong.”
Authorities said Thompson died at the hospital at 3 p.m. Friday.
Police are searching for a white Ford Focus that was seen driving away from the area. They are also looking at surveillance video.
