Penguins clinch playoff berth without Marc-Andre Fleury in NY

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins clinched a spot in the playoffs Saturday afternoon when they defeated the Islanders 5-0 in New York.

A Penguins win was one of several scenarios Saturday that would send the team to the playoffs. %

If the Pens hadn’t won against the Islanders, a Red Wings loss would have been an alternate route. They also could have clinched a playoff berth if they scored one point against the Islanders and the Red Wings won in a shootout.

Prior to the game, it was announced that goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury was out because of a concussion.

“Marc-Andre Fleury did not join the team on the trip to New York and is out with a concussion,” the team posted on Twitter.

Matt Murray started against the Islanders.

A timetable for Fleury’s return is unclear. He was previously out with a concussion in December.
