PITTSBURGH — City of Pittsburgh officials unveiled a new, mobile machine that can produce hot asphalt around the clock, and give the city a powerful new weapon to combat potholes.
Starting Wednesday, the city’s Equipment Leasing Authority began a four-month lease of the RoadMixer unit, which produces hot asphalt on site to allow for street repairs even when private asphalt plants are closed nights, weekends and in cold-weather months.

Unlike other mobile units used elsewhere in North America, the computerized system on the truck uses all new materials to generate its asphalt mix.
“Pittsburgh is leading the way in combining the best in technology and the hard work of our employees to make our roadways better and safer for all,” Mayor Bill Peduto said.
Last week, for the first time, the city released its yearly street paving list along with a searchable Street Paving Program website that lists all 44 miles planned for resurfacing in 2015.
In January the Peduto administration unveiled the city’s first online snow plow tracker.
The board agreed to a $15,000 monthly lease of the RoadMixer unit for four months. At the end of the test period the ELA has an option to buy the unit for $375,000 with the $60,000 in total lease payments going toward the sale.
