PITTSBURGH — The ambush of two New York City police officers has people across the country showing support.
Chaplains with the Pittsburgh police are asking people to shine a blue light in a window.
Some people, however, are afraid that participating in "Project Blue Light" could make them targets for criminals.
The murders of two NYPD officers and threats against Pittsburgh police have officers in the city on edge.
During a morning news conference, Chaplain John Welch asked that you put a blue light in your home window.
“It will show support for those police officers who have died in the line of duty and express hope that the coming year will be a year of peace,” Welch said.
The blue light program started in the 1980s in Philadelphia. Welch wants residents to know that the message you send to officers is that you appreciate their service.
“The vast majority of the Pittsburgh police proudly uphold the principals of accountability, integrity and respect. Participation in Project Blue Light is a simple gesture,” Welch said.
Some people on social media are worried that the gesture of placing a light in their window could make them a target. Rev. Barbara Gunn disagrees.
“There are always going to be people who don’t believe as you believe. I don’t think people should feel anxious about that,” Gunn said. “I just think it’s a time for people to stand for what they believe. Stand firm and stand strong.”
