Proud to be from Pittsburgh: St. Joseph House of Hospitality

PITTSBURGH — A man who once called a bench in Shadyside his home now has a job and a place to stay, all thanks to the friendship of a local businessman.

Bob Carter said he lived on Walnut Street for about a year after losing his home, car and everything he had.

He said that many people called him lazy and a bum, but others, like Brian Tarquinio, a portfolio manager, were very kind.

“You could tell he was struggling.  And I was always taught to treat people the same way you would want to be treated.  And just sat down and talked to him as a person and found out he is an incredible guy,” said Tarquinio.

Tarquinio made an investment in Carter as a person by taking him to the barber shop and giving him clean clothes and a cell phone.

Carter currently stays at St. Joseph House of Hospitality, a homeless outreach program of Catholic Charities.

“When they come to live here at St. Joes, they have a private room, they have three meals a day.  They have a lot of programming and support services that help men get back on their feet,” said Tom Kneier, St. Joseph House administrator.

Carter is employed at Valozzis, a high-end Italian restaurant, and said his turnaround all started when he met Tarquinio.
