Community gathers for vigil mourning 4 victims in Fayette Co. shooting

A small Fayette County community gathered at a church Monday night to try and make sense of the senseless.

Dozens attended a vigil at Christian Life Assembly in Melcroft to remember four people slain in a mass shooting Saturday at a car wash: Chelsie and Seth Cline, William Porterfield and Cortney Snyder.

"Lord, we know this was a terrible thing. A terrible tragedy," the pastor intoned.

Investigators say 28-year-old Timothy Smith shot and killed the victims early Sunday morning. On Monday, they say it's still unclear why the suspect and the victims met at the car wash.

The four victims had been at a bar earlier in the night.

Smith previously dated Chelsie Cline, and friends and family say he sought her favor even after the breakup.

Loved ones at the vigil struggled to understand the loss.

"We took a picture. I gave him a hug and told him I loved him," said Jay Randall, Porterfield's uncle. "That was the last time I talked to him."

That was just a few months ago, at Porterfield's wedding. Residents had fond memories of the man everyone called Billy, saying he was a hard worker, a giver, a father and a son.

"His mother's here," Randall said. "She's having a pretty rough time with things, as can be expected."
