GREENSBURG, Pa. — Dash camera video was released Friday showing the final moments of a Westmoreland County police officer's life.
The video comes out on the second day of the murder trial of Ray Shetler, the man accused in the 2015 shooting death of Officer Lloyd Reed.
The entire jury was also allowed to leave the courtroom to examine the crime scene for themselves.
An added police presence could be seen in the town of New Florence while the jury was there.
Local police say some neighbors were concerned, and they wanted to ensure their community felt safe.
Handcuffed and shackled, Ray Shetler looked on, too, at the house where he once lived before that November night turned tragic, now only steps away from Reed's memorial.
Shetler is charged with shooting the St. Clair Township police officer in New Florence in November 2015. The defense has claimed Shetler didn't know Reed was a police officer at the time of the shooting.
Reed had already been rushed to the hospital when officers got to Ligonier Street in 2015. Video was captured on the cruiser's dash camera and audio can be heard from a trooper's body camera.
(The) 'officer told him to drop it. (The) officer started shooting and he shot back," Shelter's girlfriend, Kristen Luther, can be heard saying. "He was drunk, I can't believe he shot someone."
The trial is expected to last two weeks. The district attorney is seeking the death penalty.
