Park 'n Ride users may soon not have place to park

CASTLE SHANNON, Pa. — Drivers using one of the most popular Park and Rides in the South Hills could soon be forced to find a new place to park.

On Tuesday, the Port Authority began passing out forms to riders, assuring them the Park and Ride in Castle Shannon will not be closing next week.

But Channel 11 has learned it will be closing at some point soon.

"I'm glad I don't use it every day, I can tell you that much," said Brad Gabriel, who spent the day downtown after using the T. "There was literally not one spot. (We) drove down every aisle and we had to park in a white lined area. I can't imagine if no one could park here."

TRENDING NOW:

Preparations are underway to transform the 500-space parking lot into an apartment and retail space, which will also include a parking deck.

That project means the Park and Ride, and the T Station, will be closed for one year.

"It will be a disaster for all of these people who work downtown," said Tom Torchia of Mt. Lebanon. "Where else are they going to go to park?"

Despite recent rumors, no timetable has been set for when work will begin.

Port Authority spokesman Jim Ritchie confirmed they will give riders 60 days notice before shutting down the station.

Channel 11 contacted Shannon Transit Village, the developer for the project, but our calls and messages were not returned.
