Woman leaps from roof of burning building in Rochester

Fire ravaged an apartment house in Beaver County on Friday morning, and one woman was injured when she had to jump from the porch roof in order to escape.

Debbie Garrett returned to the scene in her hospital gown after being treated for minor injuries.

"We tried one door, we couldn't get out because the fire was there," she said. "We tried another door, and he finall threw the air conditioner out the window and we jumped off the roof.

"I'm afraid of heights, so I just wanted to get down."

Resident Andre Goosby and his family fled when they saw flames.

"We opened a front door, smoke started coming up, fire in the hallway, so we couldn't exit that way," he said. "So we shut the door, grabbed our son, ran out the back door and ran down the stairs out to the back."

Goosby tried to help his neighbors as he escaped.

“I gave her the baby and started knocking on the neighbors' doors and windows to wake them up and tell them get out the house," he said.

Channel 11 saw extensive damage to the building, particularly the upper floors. Several fire departments, including Monaca and Beaver Falls, responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
