Father, son killed in Moon Township car crash

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A horrific accident near Robert Morris University killed a father and son Tuesday morning.

The accident happened as their car tried to turn into Moon Plaza.

Police say they've seen several accidents in this area. Investigators showed Channel 11 the traffic camera footage of the crash, which they aren't releasing to the public, to explain what happened.

The sedan with the father and son inside was turning left onto Moon Plaza when an SUV being driven by a 46-year-old Robinson Township woman came up the hill and hit the sedan in the intersection.

The father and son killed were an 86-year-old man, from Finleyville, who police say was the driver, and his 55-year-old son, from Coraopolis.

"One of the vehicles was overturned; the other actually on fire," said Moon Township Police Chief Leo McCarthy.

He told Channel 11 the traffic camera at the intersection of University Boulevard and Campus Drive recorded the deadly accident.

Police told Channel 11 the footage clearly shows both drivers had a green light, but the 86-year-old man made a left turn directly into the path of the SUV.

Police have yet to determine if the driver of the SUV that struck the sedan was speeding.

People who work nearby told Channel 11 recent improvements to the intersection, specifically adding a turning lane into the campus of RMU, have not made the intersection safer.

Moon police say there are no more crashes at this particular intersection than at any other intersections in Moon.

But the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will review the accident to see if any additional action needs to be taken.

The medical examiner has not yet released the names of the two victims.
