TARENTUM, Pa. — Two firefighters were hurt battling a large fire that destroyed a home and caused it to start collapsing Thursday morning in Tarentum, officials said.
Flames were reported just before 10 a.m. at the home on East Ninth Avenue, at the intersection with Lock Street.
The two firefighters had to climb down ladders from the second floor to escape the fire because of the intense fire.
Both were taken to the hospital with minor injuries and burns and are expected to be okay.
The three-unit apartment building is a total loss. At least four people were inside and neighbors helped them get out before firefighters arrived. No one was hurt, but a few pets did not make it out.
Horns of the fire trucks at the scene were blown to alert all firefighters to get out of the home because it was collapsing. It appears the fire started on the first floor and the cause is under investigation.
