Fire tears through garage at Unity Township municipal complex

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

Black smoke filled the sky above Unity Township Sunday morning as a fire gutted a garage at the township’s public works building.
Officials are calling the damage devastating, with millions of dollars in equipment destroyed.
The fire started just before 9 a.m. inside the garage on Beatty County Road. The garage itself cost more than $1 million to build in 2004.
Officials said three people ran inside the building to save some of the equipment.

UNITY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — TRENDING NOW:

The fire, which took more than 100 firefighters to bring under control, destroyed half of the public works’ equipment and maintenance items, including several trucks and tools.
Neighboring communities are helping with equipment needs until the township can replace what it lost.
"Our motto right now is to continue and do the work that we have been doing. And we're going to do that. And all we need to do is make sure we have the equipment to do just that,” Township supervisor Mike O'Barto said.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
