2 firefighters hospitalized after battling thick smoke, fire at Bellevue apartment building

BELLEVUE, Pa. — Two firefighters were taken to the hospital after battling thick smoke and flames Friday morning at an apartment building fire in Bellevue.

The fire started shortly after 8:30 a.m. at a home that houses five apartments along Grant Avenue.

Thick smoke and fire poured from the roof and windows.

One person was home when the fire started, and got out safely.

The heat and humidity made it challenging for fire crews. Additional fire departments were called in to help with manpower. Around 25 departments in total responded.

An EMS rehabilitation tent was also set up to help firefighters cool off and re-hydrate.

Three firefighters were checked out for heat-related illnesses and two were taken to the hospital. Their conditions are unknown.

It took firefighters two hours to bring the large fire under control. The cause hasn't been determined.

“When we pulled up, we did have fire coming out of the front door, windows of the first floor, so pretty good assumption it started there, but the fire marshal will determine for sure,” said Glenn Pritchard, Bellevue Assistant Fire Chief.
