Greensburg Bishop Edward Malesic named new bishop of Catholic Diocese of Cleveland

GREENSBURG, Pa. — Bishop Edward Malesic, who currently serves the Roman Catholic Diocese of Greensburg, has been appointed the new bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland.

Pope Francis made the announcement Thursday morning.

Malesic, 59, was born in Harrisburg and entered the seminary program at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, in 1981. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1987 and became Greensburg’s fifth bishop in 2015.

Malesic will serve as the 12th bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland. He will be installed on Sept. 14 during a Mass in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Cleveland.

Cleveland has been without a bishop since Bishop Nelson Perez was appointed Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in January.
