Have a live Christmas tree? You can recycle it at one of 12 Pittsburgh locations

PITTSBURGH — When it comes time to take down your live Christmas tree, do you plan on recycling it? If so, the city of Pittsburgh is offering 12 drop-off locations.

From Dec. 26 to Jan. 26, the city’s Christmas Tree Recycling will allow people to have their live trees recycled instead of being sent to a landfill, which is what happens to trees left at the curb.

All ornaments, netting, tinsel and stands must be removed from trees before they are dropped off.

The trees collected will be chipped into pine mulch and made available to the public for free this spring, officials said.

Last year, more than 21 tons of trees were collected at 10 drop-off sites.
