A second officer who tried to stop the beating was also hurt.

That inmate has been identified as Paul Kendrick, 22, of Pittsburgh, who was already facing a life sentence for first-degree murder.

He's now been charged in connection with this attack as well.

Gov. Tom Wolf said the state is offering the department of corrections all the resources it needs during this time.

The last time an inmate killed a prison staff member in Pennsylvania was in 1979.
