PITTSBURGH — It’s finally here. DICK’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon weekend. The event tens of thousands of runners from around the world have been training for.
About 40,000 runners from more than 20 countries were involved in races throughout the weekend, according to marathon organizers.
“It's such a great way with 300,000 people who turn out, spectators and block parties and for those 38,000 runners, to see the city in a great, great way. It's such a great way to showcase the city,” Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said Friday at a marathon weekend kickoff event.

Marathon weekend impacts more than the participants. There are also a lot of road closures throughout the city. For anyone driving through the city or heading to a Pirates game, you'll need to know the detours.

Starting at noon Friday, the Boulevard of the Allies will be closed between Wood Street and Stanwix Street. That section of road will remain closed through Sunday.
The races begin Saturday at 8 a.m. First up is the 5K Run, which will take people through the North Side. Then, at 8:30 a.m., it’s the Toddler Trot, followed by the Kids Marathon at 9:30 a.m.
Some roads on the North Shore and downtown will be closed for Saturday’s events starting at 7:15 a.m. You can see a full list of closures on

Sunday is the big race day. The full marathon, half-marathon and marathon relay begin at 7:05 a.m.
There will be road closures throughout the city, starting at 1:30 a.m. Some heavily traveled roads like Forbes and Liberty Avenues as well as Carson Street will be impacted.
