Multiple fire departments battle flames at facility in Beaver County

AMBRIDGE, Pa. — Multiple fire departments and emergency crews were at the scene of a large fire at a facility in Beaver County Saturday morning.

Emergency officials said the flames were coming from Sukup Steel Structures in Ambridgearound 5 a.m.

Crews said part of the building collapsed and the fire was centered in the workshop part of the building. Employees were inside with the fire started and were able to get out safely.

Just before sunrise, a worker told Channel 11 they smelled smoke and noticed a bright light. In a matter of minutes, the building was engulfed in flames.

That worker also said propane tanks started to explode after the initial fire started, but that is still under investigation.

The Ambridge fire chief said there was “no big chemical emergency” despite possible minor explosions in the area. However, there is extensive structural damage to the building, which will have a huge impact.

“It’s a terrific blow to the community because they were one of our biggest companies in Ambridge,” said Chief Robert Gottschalk.

Gottschalk said it could be a few days before they know exactly what caused the blaze.
