Residents being forced out of their homes after apartment complex is condemned

PENN HILLS, Pa. — The clock is running out for residents of the Val Mar Apartments in Penn Hills, who were given only a few days to move out.

Residents must move out by Thursday or be forced out.

They paid their rent, but it turns out the owner didn't pay his utility bills.

About a dozen of them marched to the Wilkinsburg Penn Joint Water Authority, demanding the water be turned back on.

It was turned off September 10.

"We went through all the things that we're going through with the kids that live up there and all the sick people that live up there," said resident Andre Mobley.

But the water authority said they are required by the health department to turn off the water after the apartment owner failed to install back flow monitors

"At this point, I think we can work out a resolution to all of this by simply giving us a court order," said Nick Bianchi, the executive director of the Wilkinsburg Penn Joint Water Authority.

But according to the Trib, Penn Hills officials said they will not extend the time limit for residents to move out.

Electricity has also been out since Labor Day and the Penn Hills manager said without electric, water, sanitary systems and a fire alarm, the property is unsafe and those still there on Sept. 20 will be removed.

Residents are now struggling to find a place to move and a way to pay for it.
