Teen uses $20 tool to save mom from dying in crash

A 15-year-old girl used a $20 tool to save her mother’s life after a the two were involved in a rollover crash into a creek.

Dawn Steinmetz was driving with her 15-year-old daughter to take their cat to the vet when the car veered off West Brewster Road in Butler County in June.

Though she said she has no memory of the crash, her daughter, Faith, remembers everything and said a $20 tool saved both of their lives. The tool can be used to break glass and cut a person’s seat belt off.

While her mom was underwater, Faith Steinmetz, who was also injured, broke the windshield with the tool and ran for help.

“Honestly, I just think I was thinking of helping my mom, and I knew I had to get her out, so I knew if I panicked, I wouldn’t be able to help her,” Faith Steinmetz said.

Dawn, who was underwater for about four minutes, spent six days in the hospital in an induced coma with a concussion. Doctors said she has amnesia, but she shouldn’t have been alive after being underwater for that long. She said she is forever grateful for her daughter’s actions.

“She save my life. I would not be alive without her. If I was on my own, I would not be here right now,” Dawn said.
