Police ID couple shot, killed in New Kensington

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. — On Thursday, police identified the woman killed in a Wednesday morning shooting in New Kensington.

Officers said they found John Russ’ body in a car in the 400 block of Fourth Avenue and the body of Shannon Bongartz, 29,  outside of the vehicle.  Bongartz, Russ' girlfriend, was a mother of three, police said.

Police identified Russ as the male victim Wednesday.

Detectives said both Russ and Bongartz has been shot multiple times.

Neighbors reported hearing gunfire at about 8:30 a.m., and witnesses told police they saw a man running from the scene.

"I heard, 'Pop, pop, pop, pop,'" said Rayette Rosenberger.

Channel 11's Joe Holden reported that the investigation is focused on a white Hyundai, which was surrounded by nearly two dozen evidence markers.

"They're laying a tarp out in my neighbor's yard and they're unwinding and blowing up this big white thing, and I said, 'Honey, that's not good,'" said Rosenberger.

Miles away, Heather Cline received a call and was quickly in tears.

"My kids' dad was shot," said Russ' ex-wife.  "Now my kids are left without their dad, and it's just very sad."

"Awful.  People have a lot of nerve to do something like that in broad daylight," said Cline.

Police are investigating who shot the couple and why.
