PITTSBURGH — James Conner in the third round looks like a great choice by the Steelers, and it's the next chapter in Conner's inspiring story.
Conner has enjoyed remarkable success while overcoming severe, complicated challenges.
In 2014, Conner ranked nationally with 1,675 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns, and the Atlantic Coast Conference named him both Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year.
Then, in Pitt's opening game of 2015, Conner suffered a season-ending knee injury that required surgery.
His biggest battle, though, was yet to come.
Less than three months after that knee injury, on Thanksgiving Day, Conner was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma.
He began a brutal six-month regimen of intense chemotherapy, and yet still found the will and strength to participate in Pitt's winter conditioning program.

Conner received well-wishes from Pittsburgh's three professional teams – the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins – and even from former President Bill Clinton, who signed a get-well card for Conner.
Conner returned to the field in 2016 and rushed for 1,092 yards and 16 touchdowns. He had 189 total yards in Pitt's upset win over Clemson.
Conner earned first-team All-ACC honors in his final collegiate season and finished his Pitt career with 3,733 yards and 30 touchdowns.
Now, Conner is ready to move next door after the Steelers selected him with this year's 105th overall pick.
Conner's path has included some unfortunate and sobering twists and turns, but he has not allowed his story to be defined by a difficult injury, or devastating diagnosis. Conner's comeback from serious obstacles provides a glimpse into some lasting life lessons.
With equal parts character and courage, passion and perseverance, Conner has shown what it truly means to be a champion.
Fortunately for Pittsburgh sports fans, Conner will continue to demonstrate the qualities that have helped to forge his legacy on the other side of the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.
