PITTSBURGH — Light rail commuter trains have resumed running into downtown Pittsburgh after a barge possibly hit a railroad bridge, which had to be inspected before the trains could resume using it.
The bridge crosses the Monongahela River into downtown from the city's South Hills suburbs which are served by the Port Authority of Allegheny County trains.
When the bridge was closed, the trains had to stop at South Hills Junction several miles from downtown, where shuttle buses were bringing passengers into downtown.
Inspectors determined the bridge could reopen about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Officials have yet to confirm that the barge hit the bridge, how that happened, or what kind of damage resulted.
