HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Harrison Township leaders are looking to improve safety along Freeport Road.
“Very dangerous, very dangerous,” said Dylan Stuber when we asked him if he thought Freeport Road needed to be improved.
Residents, like Stuber who live in Harrison Township, told Channel 11 News that Freeport Road has grown more and more dangerous over the years. With the addition of a Sheetz gas station, outdated traffic lights, busy intersections, and several schools along or near the road; drivers we spoke with said it can be difficult entering and exiting off the road.
“A car will pass you’ll go to pull out, and then another car [will come] so you have to hurry. [You worry] I might have it, I might not have it,” explained Stuber.
People in the township told us something needs to be done so that both drivers and pedestrians are safe.
“Cars are flying up and down and nobody wants to let you out,” said Linda.
While Stuber added, “A lot of speeders, very fast cars, I think it’s definitely a troubled area for fast cars and I’d like to see something done soon.”
Township leaders agree with residents and have hired HRG engineering to devise a solution that will synchronize the lights.
PennDOT has also confirmed they are working with Harrison Township on a School Zone Project to boost safety. Work will include signs, pavement markings, and lights near the schools.
Additionally, existing electronic and static school zone signs will be updated at:
- Freeport Road
- Broadview Boulevard
- Argonne Drive
- California Avenue
- All near Highlands Middle School
“For the safety of the children, and to keep the traffic flowing, it’s a wonderful idea,” Linda, said.
