Indian grocery store in Pittsburgh shut down; rodent issues persist at reinspection, per report

PITTSBURGH — An Indian grocery store in Pittsburgh was ordered to close on Thursday.

The Allegheny County Health Department ordered Kohli’s Indian Imports, located on South Craig Street in the city’s North Oakland area, to close after a reinspection.

The grocery store was hit with a consumer alert on Dec. 3. after an inspection found multiple high-risk violations, like chewed bags of food, rodent droppings throughout the facility and food held at incorrect temperatures.

When inspectors returned to the store, high-risk violations persisted.

According to a report, there were two violations involving rodents. Inspectors found chewed packaging and products, boxes used to store products with fresh and old dropping inside and rodent droppings inside containers used to store onions. There were also droppings in the basement, although the report notes that the facility has “made significant progress removing rodent droppings” from several parts of the building.

The other high-risk violation noted in the report is for cleaning and sanitation. Inspectors saw the blade of a knife covered with dried food debris. The report states the facility “does not have the means to safely wash, rinse and sanitize equipment or utensils.”
