Man dead after falling 41 feet from catwalk at West Mifflin slag recycling plant

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. — OSHA is investigating after a 65-year-old man fell 41 feet from a catwalk and died.

Investigators said Allegheny County 911 was called at around 2:45 p.m. Tuesday about an industrial accident in the 4800 block of Buttermilk Hollow Road in West Mifflin. The man, Melvin Long, of Clairton, was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Police said the incident happened at the Lafarge - Duquesne Slag Aggregate Plant. The plant reportedly recycles slag, a steelmaking waste product, for use as an aggregate material in construction. It has also been used by Carnegie-Mellon University for testing lunar rover technology.

Police turned over the investigation to OSHA.
