PITTSBURGH — The Cathedral of Learning’s peregrine falcon chicks are getting a checkup.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission said they are going to climb up to the 40th floor in the Cathedral and retrieve two baby falcon chicks, each just 22 days old.

The chicks will be given a full health exam, and then fitted with a U.S. Fish and Wildlife leg band.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission said peregrine falcons were at one time on the federal endangered species list in the state. The agency said that changed last fall as their population continued to grow.

The office said there are currently eight pairs of nesting peregrine falcons in the Pittsburgh region, and females typically lay three to five eggs each year. The pair nesting on the Cathedral of Learning, named Hope and Terzo, have been there for the past four years.
