Former treasurer of local cheer boosters accused of stealing nearly $19,000 from organization

WESTMORELAND COUNTY, Pa. — A woman once in charge of handling the finances for a local booster club is facing charges.

Ashley Freiberg previously served as treasurer of the Burrell Cheer Boosters. She’s accused of stealing nearly $19,000 from the organization.

Investigators say they found a number of ATM withdrawals and fraudulent transactions to Comcast, Verizon, two local casinos, and FanDuel.

When detectives tried to question Freiberg, they say she at first agreed to come in for an interview but then backed out and directed them to an attorney.

Police were notified about money missing from the boosters’ account after it was overdrawn by $2,500.

Lower Burrell community members we spoke with are outraged.

“Give the money back. Give the money back,” Maria Murphy told Channel 11.

“The fact that she had the heart to take all that money from that kids who just want to have fun, and cheer on the team… is outrageous,” community member Anna Clark told Chanel 11.

According to one of the boosters’ board members, Freiberg told her she had a rambling problem, and was going to come clean after she returned from vacation.
