PITTSBURGH — A dog once tossed away like trash is now happy and rapidly getting healthy.

Channel 11 News first reported on Fawna last month when she was found emaciated in a garbage can.

On Thursday, Channel 11's Joe Holden learned Fawna is well on the road to recovery and has already been adopted by a caring owner.

“She’s acting like a normal dog,” said Megan Fritz, who adopted the 9-month-old collie and Lab mix. “You can definitely tell she’s starting to feel and act so much better. She barks at strangers. She barks at neighbors and she barks at my cats.”

Fawna was found Oct. 30 in a garbage can in New Stanton, thrown out and discarded like trash. Investigators have since charged Nicole Baker, Fawna’s previous owner, with animal cruelty.

Fawna was immediately adopted by Fritz, who works at the Westmoreland County Humane Society.

“She’s up to 31 pounds, so she’s almost doubled her weight since I got her exactly two weeks ago,” Fritz said Thursday.

Aside from having to gain more weight, Holden reports Fawna is pretty much in the clear and expected to continue her remarkable road to recovery.
