The need across southwestern Pennsylvania has increased dramatically due to the effects of COVID-19. According to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, the pandemic has resulted in a 42 percent increase in food insecurity in our region since 2018. Individuals and families who never imagined asking for a helping hand have turned to the food bank for the first time, the food bank said.
With the community’s support, more than 36.6 million pounds of food was delivered to neighbors in need across 11 counties of southwestern Pennsylvania between March 16 and December 31, 2020.
People and neighborhoods most vulnerable to food insecurity continue to need support to ensure they have a steady source of fresh and healthy food.
