The weekend will be here before you know it, and there’s a lot going on. Here’s a look at 11 things to do this weekend.


Ligonier Ice Fest

Saturday and Sunday - Downtown Ligonier

All day Saturday and Sunday in downtown Ligonier, you’ll be able to watch in awe as chainsaws cut through blocks of ice to forge glittering frozen creations. Ice sculptures will be displayed throughout the Diamond area once they’re complete. You’ll also be able to catch a carriage ride from noon to 3 p.m. both days. On Saturday, you can enjoy the famous fireman’s spaghetti dinner starting at 11 a.m. in the town hall community room. Everyone’s favorite event, the speed carving contest, will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, where you’ll get to vote on your favorite. The festivities last from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day, but the sculptures will also be illuminated at night, so you can come by and take a look at them any time you like.


Pro Bowl Chili Walk Off

Saturday, 11 a.m. - Various locations in Beaver Falls

If ice and the cold isn’t really your thing, the first Beaver Falls Pro Bowl Chili Walk Off will help you warm right up. You’ll be able to pick up a score card and swing by each participating merchant along 7th Avenue to sample their chili. Then, you can vote for your favorite and turn in the card. The winner will be awarded the coveted golden ladle and bragging rights for 2020, and you get a chance to win gift cards at some of the chili stops you visit. This tasty event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.


World of Wheels Custom Car Show

All weekend - David L. Lawrence Convention Center

Hot rod lovers, rejoice! World of Wheels is taking over the David L. Lawrence Convention Center this weekend. This is the gathering place for car enthusiasts to enjoy a full weekend of everything custom cars. Tons of car lovers will be showing off their souped-up vehicles for a chance to win a number of prizes, including the “master builder” award, given to an entry built with little or no professional assistance. You’ll also have a chance to meet some celebrities of the automotive world, including Danny Koker and Kevin Mack from Count’s Kustoms, and 16-time funny car champion John Force. This is happening all weekend, and you can find discounted tickets at participating NAPA Auto Parts stores.


Science After Hours: Breaking Bad

Friday, 6 p.m. - Carnegie Science Center

If you’re a fan of ‘Breaking Bad’, and curious about some of the science behind the show, you’re in luck! The Carnegie Science Center invites you to “Science After Hours: Breaking Bad.” See explosive chemical reactions in the “breaking science” show at the Works Theater. You’ll be able to explore the effects of acid on organic matter, test magnetic forces at a distance and even learn about carbonation in home-brewed beer. This is a 21-and-up event, and without the kids around, you can expect deeper science content and riskier experiments.


Little Shop of Horrors

All weekend, various times - O’Reilly Theater

You can get your thrill of spooky theater, even though it’s not even close to Halloween. The “Little Shop of Horrors” is being performed at the O’Reilly Theater right now. This bizarre musical is about a struggling florist shop worker, Seymour, and his singing, man-eating plant, named Audrey II. The music, composed in the style of early sixties 60s doo-wop, features many familiar songs such as “Skid Row (Downtown)," “Somewhere That’s Green” and “Suddenly Seymour." You can catch this hilariously harrowing musical at the O’Reilly through the end of February. Tickets start at $31.


Cirque du Soleil Presents “OVO”

All weekend, various times - PPG Paints Arena

For a magical evening of acrobatics and incredible scenery, Cirque du Soleil is bringing “OVO” to PPG Paints Arena this weekend. It’s a breathtaking show that sends you into the ecosystem beneath your feet, immersing you in the lives of acrobatic insects. This colorful show follows the new insect in town and his love-smitten quest to win the heart of a ladybug. Cirque du Soleil is always sure to set the bar really high. If you want to witness the spectacle firsthand, there are seven shows this weekend.


Broadway meets Motown

All weekend, various times - The Strand Theater (Zelienople)

The big city lights are coming to Zelienople for a must-see show, “Broadway Meets Motown." The show is an exploration of how Motown has influenced the music on Broadway over the years. You can expect a full slate of your favorite hits during this rousing concert. It’s also part of The Strand’s “Broadway On Main” series, which are productions featuring headliners with genuine Broadway or national tour credentials. You can catch this show at various times this weekend and tickets start at just $25.



Table Top Game Day

Saturday, 11 a.m. - Butler Public Library

The Butler Area Public Library is once again holding its quarterly table top game day! We’re talking board games and RPG games like Dungeons and Dragons and Pathfinder. If you want to come geek out over some of your favorite games with some friends, swing by the library at 11 a.m. and play games there until 3:30 p.m. Registration is required, and you can do that here.


Beethoven’s “Fidelio”

Friday, 8 p.m.; Sunday, 2:30 p.m. - Heinz Hall

If you’re a fan of classical music, you are in luck! Not one, but two excellent concerts will take place this weekend. The first is at Heinz Hall. There, Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will be presenting “Fidelio”, Beethoven’s one and only opera. Its composition occupied the conductor for nearly a decade, going through numerous revisions and re-writes. It tells the story of one woman’s heroic struggle to rescue her husband from political imprisonment. The symphony will be joined by the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh for this very special performance. You have two chances to catch it: Friday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.


Carnegie Mellon University Philharmonic

Sunday, 7:30 p.m. - Carnegie Music Hall

This weekend will also feature conductor Kevin Noe directing the Carnegie Mellon University Philharmonic in a wonderful performance of Mahler’s “Symphony No. 5.” Regular admission to this show is $10, discounted to $5 for seniors. If you’re a current student or staff member at Carnegie Mellon or Pitt, you can get in for free with a valid ID. The performance starts at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland.



Hibernation Party

Saturday, 10 a.m. - Helltown Brewing (Export)

Feeling the winter blues? Well, check out the annual Hibernation Party at Helltown Brewery in Export on Saturday. A $35 ticket gets you a tasting glass that you can use to sample as many beers as you would like between 10 .a.m and 3 p.m.! Designated driver tickets are also available for $10. Helltown’s food truck, the Emporio Meatball truck and Vagabond Taco will be serving food all day. Live music by “Told Ya So” will start at 2 p.m.
