PITTSBURGH — It’s the first weekend of 2020 and if you’re looking for something to do, you won’t be disappointed. Here are 11 things you can check out in our area.
Food Truck-A-Palooza
Saturday, noon - Monroeville Convention Center
It’s time to fill up on the best food at western Pennsylvania’s only indoor food truck festival this Saturday. The Food Truck-A-Palooza rolls into the Monroeville Convention Center, bringing with it beer and spirits, the Kids Zone, music and, of course, tons of great food. The event runs from noon until 5 p.m., and tickets are just $10.
Winter Indoor Farmers Market
Saturday, 11 A.M. - The Marketplace at Emerald Valley (Washington)
The calendar says it’s winter, but that doesn’t mean the farmers’ markets are all locked up for the season. The Marketplace at Emerald Valley in Washington is making sure you can still get your hands on local food. The Winter Indoor Markets will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the first Saturday of January, February, March and April.
Bloomfield Saturday Winter Market
Saturday, 11 A.M. - 5050 Liberty Avenue (Bloomfield)
Bloomfield is helping you connect with your neighbors and local community with a Winter Market as well. This market is located at 5050 Liberty Avenue, right in the heart of Bloomfield, and features locally grown produce and all sorts of other good stuff. It all starts at 11 a.m. and wraps up at 2 in the afternoon.
Cranberry’s Wine 'n Shine Palooza
Sunday, Session #1: Noon - 3:30 P.M./Session #2: 1 P.M. - 4:30 P.M. - Doubletree by Hilton (Cranberry)
Some of the finest wine from the region will be pouring at the Wine 'n Shine Palooza in Cranberry Township this weekend. This event has it all: wine, food, entertainment and much more! Attendees age 21 and over will also receive a stemless tasting glass to enjoy all of those wines with. The VIP session runs from 11:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., with two shorter sessions happening as well. Those sessions will run from noon until 3:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tickets can be bought online ahead of the event, but you can get tickets at the door.
SkyWatch
Saturday, 7 P.M. & 9 P.M. - Carnegie Science Center
The Carnegie Science Center is helping you reach for the stars (and planets) with another edition of SkyWatch. The evening starts with a virtual tour of the night sky in Buhl Planetarium. Guests will also enjoy additional programs, and if the skies are clear, head up to the observatory. Admission is $4 for nonmembers / $2 for Carnegie Museums members and as an add-on to general admission.
“Jesus Christ Superstar”
All weekend, various showtimes - Benedum Center
The musical phenomenon “Jesus Christ Superstar” is in Pittsburgh all weekend long. This is a new adaptation of the production, so there will be something new for you to enjoy if you’ve seen the musical before. In fact, this production won the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival. The Benedum Center is hosting the show, and tickets are still available.
Motion City Soundtrack
Saturday, 7 P.M. - Roxian Theatre
Motion City Soundtrack will take over the Roxian Theatre in McKees Rocks for an explosive show Saturday. The band was formed in 1997 and since then has toured the world over, including performances at festivals like Warped Tour. The band went on hiatus in 2016 but returned last year to continue performing. Tickets to the show are available online.
Pittsburgh Penguins vs Florida Panthers
Sunday, 5 P.M. - PPG Paints Arena
Root on the home team Sunday as the Penguins host the Florida Panthers. It’s only one of four games being played at home in January, and PPG Paints Arena is where it all goes down. The puck drops at 5 p.m. The Penguins have a very special promotion that day, and you can help #breaktheice to help raise awareness for mental health.
Shadrack’s Christmas Wonderland’s Light Show
All weekend, 6 P.M. - Big Butler Fairgrounds (Prospect)
If you’re still in the holiday spirit, you have one last chance to check out some incredible light displays in Butler County. The Shadrack’s Christmas Wonderland’s Light Show is wrapping up on Sunday night. If you recall, you simply drive up, tune in your car’s radio, and let the Christmas spirit take you away! It’s over 2 miles of custom-made displays dancing in perfect synchronization to music playing over the radio. You can start checking out the lights at 6 p.m. each night, and it all goes on rain (and snow) or shine.
Holiday Lights Mini Golf
All weekend, 5 P.M. - Fun Fore All Family Fun Park
It’s also the last weekend to play a few rounds of mini golf surrounded by holiday lights. Fun Fore All Mini Golf’s event has been going on for a while, and if you haven’t checked it out yet, you definitely need to. You can play either the Holly Jolly Cave Course or A Very Merry Lighthouse Course for $10, or you can play both for $15. It’s not all golf though; a portion of each admission goes to The Highmark Caring Place.
Distillery Days
Saturday, noon - Pennsylvania Pure Distilleries (Glenshaw)
Finally, cocktail lovers rejoice! Pennsylvania Pure Distilleries in Glenshaw is opening the doors to the distillery from noon to 6 p.m. for free tours, tastings, and cocktails! You will learn about their process and sample award-winning vodka. You can also kick back in the lounge with a cocktail and shop in the distillery’s store. If your group consists of six or more people, the distillery asks you to contact it ahead of time.
