‘This is Us’ takes trip to ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’ in latest episode

PITTSBURGH — “This is Us” took a trip to “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” during Tuesday night’s episode.

In a flashback to a boys’ weekend, Jack Pearson took his then kindergarten-age sons Randall and Kevin to WQED-TV’s studio in Pittsburgh for a taping of the popular children’s show.

During the visit, young Randall had a conversation with the Daniel Striped Tiger puppet in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe’s castle about using his imagination.

In the present-day storyline, adult Randall and Kevin were having a discussion about their childhoods -- focusing on Randall’s personal struggles as a black boy growing up in his adoptive white family.

Randall brought up the concept of a “ghost kingdom,” where adoptees imagine what their lives would have been like if they grew up with their biological parents.

In the flashback with Daniel Striped Tiger, Randall told the puppet he has “imaginary parents.”

“Oh, that’s OK,” Daniel replied. “We all have our own neighborhoods of make-believe.”
