Parking, traffic, river restrictions announced for Pittsburgh's 4th of July celebration

PITTSBURGH — As Pittsburgh celebrates the Fourth of July at Point State Park on Tuesday, restrictions will be in place on the city’s roadways and rivers.

EQT Flashes of Freedom Celebrate America events will begin at noon, with the fireworks display scheduled for 9:35 p.m. An estimated 50,000 people will be in attendance.

PARKING

Parking will not be allowed after 11 a.m. Tuesday at the following locations

  • Commonwealth Place between Liberty and Ft. Duquesne
  • Wood Street between Liberty and 6th
  • 6th from Wood to Coffey
  • Forbes between Market Square and Stanwix
  • North Shore Drive between Casino and Chuck Noll Way
  • Art Rooney Drive from E. General Robinson to North Shore

TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS

Traffic restrictions on Mt. Washington will begin at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Drivers traveling up McArdle Roadway from the Liberty Bridge will be able to turn right onto Grandview Avenue or continue straight on Merrimac Street. There will be no left turn on Grandview Avenue until after the conclusion of the fireworks display.

On Merrimac Street, there will be no northbound traffic. Drivers will be able to turn left or right on Virginia Avenue until after the fireworks.

At approximately 7 p.m., Sycamore Street will be closed to traffic heading from Arlington Avenue to Wyoming Street. Traffic will only be permitted down Sycamore Street to Arlington Avenue from 6:30 p.m. until after the fireworks.

RIVER RESTRICTIONS

Starting at approximately 7:30 p.m., there will be a full closure of the three rivers from the west edge of the Rivers Casino on the Ohio River to mile 0.05 on the Allegheny River and to mile 0.05 on the Monongahela River. The closure will extend the entire width of the rivers until after the conclusion of the fireworks display. River Rescue will have two fully staffed boats for river patrols.

SECURITY

Officers in uniform and plainclothes will be on patrol and crossing guards will be assigned to key intersections. The Pennsylvania State Police Tactical Mounted Unit and the Allegheny County Mounted Patrol will also be downtown, and Point State Park Rangers will be activated.

The list of prohibited items at Point State Park includes, but is not limited to: firearms and ammunition, grills, glass containers, fireworks or explosives of any kind, drones or other unmanned aircraft, tents or shelters of any kind and any other items determined to be potential public safety hazards. Large bags are discouraged and all bags will be screened at security checkpoints entering the park. Additionally, bicycles must be dismounted and pushed.

During the fireworks, state police will keep traffic moving on bridges and overpasses.

Port Authority Police will have additional officers at the Wood Street T Station and other transit locations.
