PITTSBURGH — Emergency crews were called Saturday evening to a multivehicle accident in downtown Pittsburgh that ended with multiple injuries and part of a bus shelter on top of an SUV.

The accident happened about 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of 9th Street and Liberty Avenue.

Police said the initial investigation determined that a woman lost control of the Saturn sedan she was driving when she turned onto Liberty Avenue from 9th Street. That vehicle then struck a Ford Explorer SUV. A bus shelter was destroyed and a Kia Forte was also caught up in the accident.

A Channel 11 News crew at the scene reported that the storefront window of the Pittsburgh Popcorn Company was shattered.

Seven people, including pedestrians, were taken to local hospitals, according to police.

Two people were listed in critical condition at Allegheny General Hospital. Three people, including the driver of the Saturn, were taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital in stable condition. An additional two people were taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital with lacerations from glass and debris.

Officials said none of the injuries were life-threatening.

The accident happened near the Delta Foundation of Pittsburgh’s Pride in the Street event, which is headlined by singer Kesha.
