OWEGO, NEW YORK — A 9/11 memorial monument is causing controversy in a small town in southern New York State.
A group has taken issue with the writing on this monument in Owego.
It calls the perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks, "Islamic terrorists."
The Islamic Organization of the Southern Tier worries the wording could encourage hatred toward Muslims living in the area -- painting all Muslims with the same brush.
Donald Castellucci, the town supervisor, doesn't see it that way: "I don't live in a politically-correct world. I live in a historical fact world and cross terrorism, whether it's American, homegrown, Christianity, Islamic, you call it what it is. And, we don't whitewash things, especially here. And, we just think that we've done the accurate citing of what happened."
The Islamic group has asked that the monument just read, "terrorists" or even "Al-Qaeda terrorists."
