American Man, Ethiopian Woman Win Pittsburgh Marathon

PITTSBURGH,None — The 2011 Pittsburgh Marathon is history, after 18,000 participated on Sunday.

Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl ran in the half marathon, as well as some members of the Channel 11 News team.

A team from Channel 11 also competed in the marathon relay, including Darieth Chisolm and Courtney Brennan from news and Susie Toma, Daryl Griffin and Barb Gallagher from the sales department.

Walkers left the starting line at Liberty Avenue and Sixth Street at 6:30 a.m. The wheelchair race then began at 6:50 a.m. The marathon, the half marathon and the marathon relay all began from the same spot at 7 a.m.

American Jeff Eggleston, from Rochester, N.Y., took first place for the men. The women's winner was Yihunlish Delelcha, of Ethiopia.

Each winner received $6,500.

A total of 253 runners were treated for medical problems. That number includes 99 along the course and 154 at the finish line medical tent. Twenty-one runners were hospitalized with injuries.
