Boy, 2, suffered 'violent' abuse at hands of mother's boyfriend, police say

A Greensburg man is accused of abusing his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son.

State police arrested Cory Kuntz, 23, of Greensburg on Monday in connection with an incident earlier this year.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by Channel 11 News, the boy suffered severe bruises on his head, torso, back, arms and legs on April 4. Kuntz had been babysitting the boy while his mother was at work.

“We heard the kids running around and stuff, but I didn't think anything like that was happening,” former neighbor Ashley Smith said.

When the boy’s mother returned home, police said she became alarmed at the bruises and took her son to Latrobe Hospital. The child was later transferred to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Doctors said the boy’s injuries were so severe that they progressively got worse as the day went on.

According to the complaint, tests to determine whether the bruises were caused by a medical condition came back negative, and the boy tested positive for the presence of methylenedioxyamphetamine, also known as MDA or Sally.

Doctors determined that the boy was the victim of "violent child abuse," according to the criminal complaint.

“I'm thankful every day that I have my kids and they're healthy. To see somebody have beautiful children like that and letting stuff like that happen, it hurts,” Smith said.

Kuntz is facing charges of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He remained in the Westmoreland County Prison on Tuesday, unable to post a $30,000 cash bond.
