Burglary suspect found dead in stairwell of downtown Pittsburgh building

PITTSBURGH — A burglary suspect was found dead Monday morning in the stairwell of a building in downtown Pittsburgh, according to police.

At 7:24 a.m., officers received a call for a burglary. When they arrived at the building in the 300 block of the Boulevard of the Allies, they discovered the body of a 49-year-old man.

He was identified as James Hudson, of Homestead. According to the initial police investigation, he was a burglar who had entered an apartment on the seventh floor.

The resident of the apartment in question was home at the time. The two engaged in a brief struggle before the would-be burglar fled. Police said the incident did not involve a gun.

Responding officers later found the burglary suspect in a stairwell landing on the fourth floor. The medical examiner said Hudson died of blunt force trauma to his chest. The manner of his death is pending investigation.

There is a hair salon on the first floor of the building, which is next to Point Park University. The salon is not open on Mondays.
