Amazon cuts ties with Philadelphia and Pittsburgh-area delivery services; hundreds of jobs affected

PITTSBURGH — More than 600 workers between distribution centers in Sewickley and throughout Greater Philadelphia are slated to lose their jobs after Amazon.com inc. cut contracts with several delivery companies.

Amazon recently ended contracts with delivery companies like Prime EFS, Deliverol and Courier Distribution Systems. It calls their contractors Delivery Service Partners — independent companies that deliver packages from an Amazon-operated distribution facility.

In Pittsburgh, Courier Distribution Systems announced it will lay off 64 workers at a warehouse in Sewickley at 501 North Drive. Those layoffs, combined with the 553 total jobs being terminated at Philadelphia-area warehouses, add up to more than 600 positions reportedly being eliminated by delivery companies throughout Pennsylvania according to announcements made this month.
