PITTSBURGH — About a third of the furloughed miners from the idled Enlow Fork Mine won't be coming back to work when the mine goes back into operation at some future date, Consol Energy Inc. told employees this week.

Consol (NYSE: CEIX) idled Enlow Fork, one of the three mines at its huge underground Pennsylvania Mining Complex in Greene and Washington counties, in April due to a sharp drop in demand for coal. It filed a WARN notice with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor saying it intended to lay off 233 employees at Enlow Fork. There are about 600 jobs at Enlow Fork at full production.

Enlow Fork remains idled with no date for a restart.

“In these unprecedented times, it is extremely difficult to predict when our production at Enlow Fork will return to normal capacity, as it is always our intent to run our operations based on market conditions,” a Consol spokesman told the Business Times.
