PITTSBURGH — When the region’s largest grocery chain debuts a newly built store on Penn Avenue in Shadyside in the next few years as part of new mixed-use redevelopment, the company will open not just a new store but one with a new brand for the location.
After decades of operating a Giant Eagle store at the Shady Hill Center along Penn Avenue and Shakespeare Street, the company will instead open its new store on the site as a Market District, the more upscale brand the grocer typically uses for much larger full-service stores.
The new Market District of about 30,000 square feet will front on Penn Avenue and anchor a full redevelopment of the shopping center by its owner, Echo Realty, which is moving forward with a larger mixed-use project called the Meridian.
Dick Roberts, a spokesman for Giant Eagle, noted how the company has opted to brand the new store as Market District in relatively close proximity to the company’s Market District store on Centre Avenue near the corner of Negley, a larger store with a comparatively wealthy clientele.
