Pittsburgh airport lands $20M for its new terminal project as part of federal infrastructure law

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) has received $20 million in federal funds for its Terminal Modernization Program (TMP), a $1.4 billion multi-year endeavor that broke ground last fall. The funding comes as part of a $1 billion allocation in grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration, which itself is derived from the $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act signed into law by President Joe Biden last fall.

PIT is one of 85 airports across the country to receive a grant for the funding of an infrastructure project, which are typically paid for by the airports and their airline partners. At the end of 2021, the Allegheny County Airport Authority (ACAA), which manages PIT, finalized nearly $833 million in bonds for the project and expects to make up the difference via costs passed on to the airlines and passengers as well as through its on-site natural gas drilling, among other sources.

Upon completion, PIT’s TMP will consolidate the airport’s two terminals into one 700,000-square-foot complex that will combine ticketing, the security checkpoint and baggage claim into one facility before connecting to the concourses. The airport will also get a new rental car and parking garage multi-modal complex as well as new roadways to the finished terminal as part of the project that will bring other improvements.
