PITTSBURGH — A snorkeling mask as PPE? Turns out, it works.

Two anesthesiologists in Boston invented the converted swimwear which was designed with help by engineers from MIT and Google. Now, thanks to the Richard King Mellon Foundation, the masks are on their way to Pittsburgh via a $200,000 grant to MasksOn.org, a nonprofit formed by the two doctors behind the converted mask concept.

The grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation will see 4,000 of these masks brought to local health care workers fighting the pandemic. Initial recipients will include Allegheny County’s seven Federally Qualified Health Centers. Westmoreland County will also see some of the masks as some will be donated to Excela Health, Bethlen Communities and Westmoreland County firefighters.
