PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh and the surrounding area continued to see fewer layoffs and furloughs last month compared to earlier in the year, though economic hardships remain for many as the Covid-19 pandemic continues.
According to the most recent report from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry, the Pittsburgh metropolitan statistical area had an overall unemployment rate of 8.2% in September throughout the counties of Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland. This marked a decrease of 2.5 percentage points from the region’s August unemployment rate of 10.7%. For Pennsylvania, statewide unemployment was 8.1%, a decrease of 2.3 percentage points from the previous month. Nationally, unemployment fell one half of a percentage point to 7.9% over the same time period.
Even as the unemployment rate ticked down, Pittsburgh-area companies continued to file new or updated Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notices with the commonwealth’s Department of Labor & Industry, though not all were Covid-19 related as has been the case in previous months.
