Waste Management eyes Pennsylvania, elsewhere for landfill gas plants

PITTSBURGH — Waste Management, one of the nation’s leading waste collection and disposal companies, is looking to build a new renewable natural gas facility somewhere in Pennsylvania as it further builds up its landfill-gas capability.

Renewable natural gas can come from a variety of sources, but one that has become particularly visible in recent months has been the gas collected from the methane stored and emitted from landfills. And it’s an area where Waste Management excels: It has for the past 20 years produced landfill gas that is used to create electricity and transportation fuel, with about 150 landfill gas-to-energy plants in the United States.

It’s increasing that commitment to renewable natural gas and sustainability under the aegis of Tara Hemmer, SVP and chief sustainability officer. Hemmer told the Business Times that Waste Management has plans for between 16 and 20 new renewable natural gas facilities across the country.
