A 10-year-old boy hid and called police to report that his pregnant mother was being attacked by his father, police said.

LaVaughn Jermone Gray, 40, is charged with aggravated assault of an unborn child, burglary, endangering the welfare of children and simple assault.

Channel 11 News learned that the victim has a protection from abuse order against Gray.

According to a criminal complaint, the 10-year-old boy was hiding upstairs at a home on Ipswich Court in East Liberty, when he called police Wednesday night. When police arrived, they found the home in disarray and found a woman with noticeable injuries. The woman said that Gray is her ex-boyfriend and the father of her two children. She stated she is also seven weeks pregnant with Gray’s child.

The woman said Gray had called her multiple times, then showed up at the home, punched a screen window in and climbed through the window. The woman said Gray jumped on top of her and choked her, punched her and pulled her hair so hard that multiple braids were torn from her scalp

The woman said she feared for her 6-month-old baby, who police said appeared uninjured but was crying loudly. The woman said Gray had kicked a chair that the baby was sitting in and stated that, “It was in my way.”

As officers were at the home, Gray called the woman’s phone multiple times. A police officer spoke with Gray on the phone and asked to meet with him to get his side of the story. Gray told police he was at Paulson and Meadow streets and gave a description of his clothing.

Two officers met Gray at the intersection, where he had fallen into a sinkhole in the road. Gray was treated at a hospital for minor superficial injuries, then transported to the Allegheny County Jail.

Gray is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Sept. 28.
