CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — State police in Butler are investigating a former Clinton Township secretary accused of embezzling nearly $6,000 from the township.
Margaret Nelson turned herself in on theft and fraud charges Wednesday.
According to a criminal complaint, Nelson admitted to taking the money.
According to police, Nelson confessed she wrote a check to herself worth $5824.60. In the books, Nelson said the money went to a pipe and supply company.
Police obtained paperwork showing that Nelson charged the township’s credit card for multiple unauthorized purchases on the Home Shopping Network totaling $539.14.
“The supervisor found some discrepancies, they brought in auditors and they fired Margaret Nelson that day. They took her computer and make sure nobody else touched her books,” said Mike Gallagher, Clinton Township solicitor.
Channel 11 has learned that police are expanding the investigation to learn how long could have been embezzling money.
