BOSTON — Former Penguins player Kevin Stevens has pleaded guilty to federal drug charges, according to the Boston Globe.

Stevens, 51, pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiring to sell oxycodone with another man in Massachusetts.

He could face up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced on March 28.

Stevens' lawyer, Paul V. Kelley, told the newspaper that Stevens became addicted to painkillers when he was a player, and that he has been sober for "many months."

"In his effort to manage the pain from this injury, and from a neck injury suffered in an auto accident years later, Kevin fell under the grip of addictive pain medication," Kelley told the Globe.

Kelley said Stevens pleaded guilty so he could "move on with his life."

Stevens played in the NHL from 1987 to 2002. He was a member of the Penguins' championship teams in 1991 and 1992.
