Falling icicles send boy to hospital

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — A 10-year-old boy from Minnesota is home from the hospital after getting hit in the head by a falling icicle. It happened when his family says he walked under a Minneapolis skyway.

With the Schuler family every day is an adventure, but Monday was something else. A birthday lunch for mom in downtown Minneapolis took a nasty turn when the Schulers exited City Center and passed under some icicles hanging from a skyway.

A row of icicles fell, peppering Ayden and opening a large, bloody gash in his head. His mother called 911, and he got an ambulance ride and an overnight stay at the hospital.

It took seven staples and some sutures to close the wound on Ayden's head. "You think of icicles as these cute little dangly things off the top of your roof. You don't think of them as the daggers that they can be," Lucas Schuler, Ayden's father, told KARE.

Ayden's parents are keeping an eye on their son for signs of concussion.

A spokesperson for the city of Minneapolis says skyway maintenance is the responsibility of the owners of the buildings they connect.
